This competition began as a local event on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) campus in 2009, emerging from a class on e-waste issues taught by industrial design professor William Bullock. During that first year, students in that class held a local collection event, and then used the materials donated to build models of the design concepts they developed for the class and competition. The following document was developed by those students as a guide for similar efforts by other students. Please be sure to check with local recycling coordinators, state environmental agencies, and other relevant authorities in your area prior to conducting your own collection to ensure that you are complying will the law in your area. If you are in the United States and would like to learn more about existing legislation related to electronics recycling and scrap electronics management, see the Sustainable Electronics Initiative Law & Policy page at http://www.sustainelectronics.illinois.edu/policy/.
SEI Resources: SEI Resources are collections of records for both online and hard copy material grouped by subject.
SEI RefWorks Database: The Sustainable Electronics Initiative (SEI) maintains a searchable bibliographic database of resources related to sustainable electronics and e-waste issues. This database mainly consists of peer-reviewed journal literature, as well as links to policy papers and other reports.
